5 ESSENTIAL STEPS TO KEEP THE SKIN HYDRATED IN YOUR 40S

BY JEN AUH

Hydrated skin

In your 40s, it is necessary to adapt your skincare routine to the needs of the age. Start opting for products that better hydrate, nourish, and protect the skin. Applying a hydrating face mask at night and a good moisturizer during the daytime is essential to maintain smooth and bright skin

When you reach this age, you need a skincare routine that suits your skin type for healthy, moisturized skin with less wrinkles. As well, it is also important to sleep well and eat a balanced diet with lots of vitamin C and A.

5-STEP HYDRATING SKINCARE ROUTINE

1. Apply a moisturizing cream at least twice a day

Something as basic as hydration has to go a little further after 40. It is time to invest in a good moisturizer that hydrates and nourishes deeply. The thicker and richer the cream, the better. You should apply it at least twice a day, in the morning and at night. At night, you can also apply a moisturizing serum with active ingredients.

In addition to moisturizing, the cream should include antioxidants such as vitamins C and E or retinol to repair the skin barrier. As well, choose a cream with active ingredients that counteract the effects of skin oxidation: dark spots, wrinkles, sagging, or lack of luminosity.

2 tips on how to apply the moisturizer

– Apply the cream with facial massages to stimulate the natural production of collagen and elastin, which are responsible for keeping the skin healthy and smooth.

– A useful tip is to apply the moisturizing cream after a shower when the skin is still a little damp, as it will increase the water retention and, by having the pore more open, the product will absorb much better.

2. Include a hydrating face mask to your night routine

Moisturize your skin deeply with hydrating face masks. These products have a high concentration of active ingredients and are a good complement to the daily skincare routine.

Apply the mask on your skin for 10-15 minutes. The effects of many masks are immediate. Masks are perfect for preparing the skin before an important event, or whenever the face looks dull and tired. They immediately make the face look smooth and hydrated.

Remember to always choose a specific face mask for your skin type (oily, dry, sensitive, or normal). For dry skin, a moisturizing face mask helps to increase hydration, prevent moisture loss, and avoid the feeling of tightness.

Also, anti-aging masks make the skin look younger and redensified, with less visible wrinkles. We recommend masks that contain hyaluronic acid for deep hydration. Two good hydrating face mask options are: Laneige’s Water Sleeping Mask and Kiehl’s Overnight Hydrating Face Mask.

3. Use sun protection every day

You should wear sunscreen 365 days a year, even if you don’t sunbathe. If you want to avoid the dreaded sun spots and dry skin, which also age the skin, use a sunscreen with SPF 50.

Even if your moisturizing or anti-wrinkle creams contains a sun protection factor, apply sunscreen daily. Remember that you should reapply your sunscreen or cream every two hours if you spend a lot of time outside. That also allows the skin to retain liquids and stay hydrated.

4. Drink water

Between 15% and 20% of the water in our body is found in the skin, a percentage that decreases with age, since we lose the ability to retain it.

Drinking enough water is the best way to keep your skin healthy and hydrated from within. More than ever in your life, your skin needs to be hydrated on a daily basis, as it will dehydrate faster due to cellular aging.

5. Sleep well and eat a balanced diet

As well, sleep at least 8 hours to let the skin regenerate and keep the skin hydrated and bright. Moreover, control your stress and do sport to get toxins out of your body.

Finally, avoid smoking and drinking alcohol, since they dehydrate the skin and harm it. To form new cells and keep your skin nourished, it is essential to eat a balanced diet in proteins and vitamins. Some foods that help the skin stay hydrated are: oatmeal, carrots, oranges, avocados, tomatoes, kiwis, red fruits, cucumbers, and walnuts.
